Parchment paper is a well-loved kitchen essential for professional and home chefs and bakers alike. Its a grease- and moisture-resistant paper that has been specifically treated for oven use. You can purchase it in bleached or unbleached varieties. Because the paper has been treated with silicone, it is nonstick, heat-resistant, and water-resistant. Parchment paper uses are vast and varied. Baking parchment can be used to line cake pans or baking sheets to prevent sticking. It can cover your workspace to protect it from messes (like the flour-induced frenzy that happens after you roll out pizza dough) and can also be used to wrap entre dishes like fish prior to throwing them in the oven. You can even put parchment paper down on a baking sheet before you place bacon on it for the simplest and cleanest way to cook this delectable breakfast item and forego the usual grease-filled mess. If youre grating, zesting, or sifting, try doing so on parchment paper. That way, all you have to do is pick up the paper and allow your ingredients to fall on top of whatever dish youre creating. If youre lining a cake pan, a good trick is to use the bottom of the pan to trace a circle onto the parchment paper. From there, cut the piece of non-stick baking paper and place it inside the pan prior to pouring in your batter. The nonstick baking paper will prevent the cake from sticking and will prevent you, the baker, from ending up with the frustration that comes along with a stuck and unusable cake. (Theres nothing worse than pulling a beautiful cake out of the oven, only to come to the realization that the cake will not come out of the pan!)To line baking sheets, use a bit of coconut oil, butter, or spray to get the corners of the parchment paper to stick and to prevent rolling while baking. If youre using parchment paper, the beauty of it is that your baked goods (particularly the delicate ones like cookies) will release from the pan easily and without getting stuck. If youve yet to try it, parchment paper baking will quickly revolutionize your entire baking experience. You can purchase parchment paper by the roll, in sheets, or in pieces that are already pre-cut depending on what size you need for your cake pan and baking sheets. Find it in the baking section of grocery stores or right here at Bobs Red Mill.
