Alana Kysar: Generosity and Aloha Spirit
By: Elisabeth Allie | October 27 2019Alana Kysar's cookbook Aloha Kitchen contains a gorgeous array of recipes from Hawaii, a place known for its generosity and hospitality. Curious? She contributed her recipe for Sweet Potato Haupia Bars as part of our Bob's by the Book interview series! We have an interview below, as well as a video and a chance to win a copy of her cookbook from Penguin Random House.
Bob's Red Mill: What’s the first thing you ever learned to cook on your own, and how has that dish impacted your journey/life in the kitchen?
Alana Kysar: Salad! I learned how to create salads and was judged on my creative, presentation and the overall flavor by my father at an early age. It really set the stage and impacted the way I look at food.
BRM: What’s your favorite food memory?
AK: This is a tough question. I don’t know if I can properly answer it. Maybe picking up a tub of poke and beers and watching the sunset on the beach.
BRM: Name a dish everyone should learn to make, and why.
AK: Mochiko chicken. If you like fried chicken, this marinated version will become an instant favorite.
BRM: If you could only take one dish to every social event for the rest of your life, what would it be and why?
AK: Butter mochi. It’s always a hit and super easy to make!
BRM: What’s the one kitchen rule you swear by?
AK: Clean as you go. Trust me, it makes life so much easier.
BRM: If you could only grab for one Bob’s Red Mill product, what would it be and why.
AK: All-purpose flour—the possibilities are endless.
Our thanks to Alana for the short and sweet interview! Make sure to check out her video, below, and enter to win a copy of her cookbook by November 4, 2019.
