Jenny Keller: Creativity and Cookies

By: Elisabeth Allie | October 1 2019
Jenny KellerWelcome to our Bob's by the Book interview series, profiling some of our favorite cookbook authors! We're kicking things off with Jenny Keller from Jenny Cookie Bake Shop, her incredible bakery. Jenny shared her famous Sugar Cookie Dough recipe with us (#protip: you'll want to keep it handy for the holidays) and participated in a great interview and video with us. Get to know her, and don't miss the chance below to win a copy of her cookbook from publisher Harper Collins, Cookie Class, in which Jenny shares 120 creative cookie decorating ideas! Bob's Red Mill: What’s the first thing you ever learned to cook on your own, and how has that dish impacted your life in the kitchen? Jenny Keller: To be honest, I'm not a big cook. I enjoy baking much more than cooking, which would explain why I'd rather eat cookies for dinner than prepare an actual meal, lol. At a young age, I learned how to make snickerdoodle cookies. They are one of the easiest cookies to make and don't require many ingredients. I think the appreciation for quick, simple and no-fail was learned early on. BRM: What’s your favorite food memory? JK: My favorite food memory was when I was probably 9 or 10 years old and I was determined to replicate Dairy Queen's Cookie Dough Blizzard. I made chocolate chip cookie dough and rolled it into tiny bite-size balls and then mixed them into chocolate ice cream. It tasted nothing like Dairy Queen! Jenny Keller Cookie Class Harper CollinsBRM: Name a dish everyone should learn to make, and why. JK: I think everyone should have one go-to dessert in their arsenal. Something that is quick, simple and no-fail. I love to make classic strawberry shortcake with homemade whipped cream. Though this is more of a summery dessert, I love that it's fast to make and can be served a variety of ways. I have served shortcake at parties, events and brought it as dessert to numerous dinners. BRM: If you could only take one dish to every social event for the rest of your life, what would it be and why? JK: A cake plate of my sugar cookies!! No one has ever been sad when I've shown up with cookies. Jenny Keller Cookies BRM: What’s the one kitchen rule you swear by? JK: Clean as you go! It's so much fun to get creative in the kitchen, but no one wants to clean up the mess. If you just clean as you go, no one is left with the mess! BRM: If you could only grab for one Bob’s Red Mill product, what would it be and why. JK: Bob's Red Mill Gluten Free 1-to-1 Baking Flour. This product has given me the opportunity to transform my classic sugar cookie recipe to a gluten free option. I love that this product helps make sugar cookies accessible to everyone! We want to thank Jenny for a fantastic interview. Before you leave, make sure to watch our video below to see Jenny in action, and enter to win a copy of her cookbook, Cookie Class (also available online) by answering the question, “If you could design any sugar cookie, what would it be and why?” by October 7, 2019!

I would love to win this contest and create a signature cookie that represents our New Years Eve Gala & Fundraiser that will benefit a local Cowlitz County non profit that helps children in our community.

I love Jennies Cookies, I only like buttercream frosting and her designs give me a lot of inspiration for my cookies, I'm not a royal icing fan at all, yes beautiful cookies but nothing taste like buttercream decorated sugar cookies
