Homemade Cake Baking Tips

Making a homemade cake is a fun and rewarding process. While homemade baking does require a bit of effort, the result is well worth it. Follow the homemade cake baking tips below to ensure that all of your chocolate cake recipes turn out as tasty as possible.

Follow the Recipe

When making a homemade dessert, it's crucial to follow the recipe. The great thing about homemade baking is that you're in charge of the ingredients. However, that is also what gets people in trouble. Though it may be tempting to sub out eggs, reduce sugar, or change up the flour, we don't recommend doing so unless the recipe lists approved alternatives. Each ingredient of a recipe works together and is needed for a reason. Just one minor substitution can throw off your cake's taste and texture. For the best results, follow the recipe the first time you try it, and then make changes as you see fit the next time.

Know the Temperature of Your Oven

The temperature of your ingredients will drastically affect the final result, and it's essential to pay close attention to a recipe's instructions. If your homemade cake recipe calls for room temperature ingredients, listen! Using room temperature eggs, sour cream, butter and milk will affect the consistency and flavor of your final cake. When combined at room temperature, ingredients typically bond easier, which can help prevent overmixing. If you're having trouble getting ingredients to room temperature, we recommend setting a timer an hour or two before beginning your recipe to set out the ingredients listed.

Use the Proper Measurements

measuring spoons

Each ingredient in a recipe works together to form chemical reactions that ultimately determine the flavor and texture of your cake. If your measurements are even slightly off, it could result in recipe failure. We recommend using a baking scale and weighing the ingredients out one by one for the most accurate measurements.

If you don't have the tools or time to weigh your cake's ingredients, use the spoon and level method: instead of scooping flour out of a container or a bag with your measuring cup, use a spoon to scoop it into the cup instead. Once you've added enough flour, be careful not to pack it down. Doing so will cause the flour to settle, and you'll wind up with more flour than needed. Instead, use the back of a knife to level off the top of the measuring cup.

Mix Ingredients Cautiously

Whether you plan to use an electric mixer or mix your cake batter by hand, mix the cake batter just until the ingredients are combined. An overmixed batter will deflate all of the air and overdevelop the gluten, resulting in a tough and dense texture. On the other hand, an undermixed batter will prevent the ingredients from thoroughly combining, causing your cake to end up a crumbly mess.

Leave the Oven Closed

Though it may be tempting, it's best to avoid opening the oven as your cake bakes. With each oven open, you'll let in cool air and cause a temperature change that could result in a sunken or cracked cake surface. Instead of checking on your cake, set a timer for the suggested baking time and check for doneness with a toothpick. If the toothpick comes out clean, the cake is ready to be removed from the oven. Investing in an oven thermometer is another great way to check your oven's temperature and calculate the time it will take your baked goods to bake.

Allow the Cake to Cool

As tempting as it is to bite into a warm piece of freshly baked cake, moving or decorating a cake before it has had time to cool could result in disaster. Cooling a cake for the proper amount of time allows the texture and flavor of the cake to settle. To cool your cake off properly, place the pan on a wire rack and leave it alone for about 30 minutes. If you plan on frosting your cake, put it in the freezer for 45 minutes to an hour to prevent the frosting from melting.

Decorate Your Cake

For a cake that looks as great as it tastes, decorate it! Decorating a cake can be as simple as applying frosting to as extravagant as placing fresh edible flowers on top. Cake decorations can take the flavor and look of your cake to the next level in minutes.
