Basic Flatbread Toppings
The best part of making a flatbread at home is that there are no expectations. Instead of worrying about what others will think, get creative in the kitchen and mix together ingredients that sound good to you. From dried fruit to cheese, here are a few of the most common flatbread toppings.
Sauce
The sauce you choose to top your flatbread will largely depend on the other toppings. If you're making a sweet flatbread, then a simple glaze, honey, vinaigrette, or olive oil will work well. Alfredo sauce, jarred pizza sauce, tomato sauce and pesto are often used for a more savory flatbread.
Cheese
One thing that separates flatbread apart from pizza is the versatility of the ingredients. When making pizza, you'll likely stick to traditional pizza cheese like mozzarella or cheddar that is easy to melt. However, you can try cheeses like goat cheese, brie and burrata when making flatbread.
Vegetables
Seasonal vegetables taste great on any flatbread recipe. Vegetables are an excellent way to boost the flavor and texture of the dish and will also help ramp up the nutritional value. When picking veggies for your flatbread, try to stick to those that are in season, as they'll often add more flavor. Pissaladière, the classic French dish, is a flatbread with caramelized onions, garlic butter, olives, and anchovies; it is the perfect way to highlight onions when they're in season.
For a vegan option, try a flatbread recipe made using a simple 3 ingredient flatbread and roasted seasonal vegetables like zucchini, bell peppers, and cherry tomatoes..
Fruit
Sweet and savory flatbreads taste great when topped with a bit of fruit. Plums, dried apricots, pears and even coconut flakes make an excellent addition to flatbread. They can transform an everyday recipe into one that your family will talk about for dinners to come.
